Still Learning To See

Finalist #23, Fern Green!

This photograph of green ferns just hollered to be posted today, after yesterday’s red leaf. Sorry. Making the fern photograph was a wonderfully surprising experience. We have a number of kinds of ferns growing in the back yard and I’ve photographed them under a variety of conditions, with some good successes.

One day I tried just pushing my whole camera right into a clump of Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) and discovered I could “paint” the image green with the close-up and blurred leaves while also focusing through some of them to a specific leaf a few feet away. Just moving the camera an inch or two changed everything. I was pleased with the result and have used it in a number of other other situations since!
