It is all to easy to describe our world as “crazy” when, in fact, most of it—at least the non-human part—is much better described as fascinating or even miraculous. When I look out my window at the hundreds of different kinds of plants growing in the yard, overflowing with shapes and colors, it IS a miracle. It also reminds me of human beings, in all different shapes, colors, and places.

And when I see insects flying and crawling all over, such as the ethereal Phantom Crane Fly or when I swat at some tiny unknown flying creature (WAIT! tiny wings, eyes, brain, sex organs, how can I swat such a miracle?), or when I watch the dozens of birds coming to bathe in the stone birdbath, or the hummingbird finding sustenance one blossom at a time. LIFE!

And the sun shining, the shadows, the wind moving through the leaves, the life-giving rains…all of it is both fascinating and miraculous. And when I consider what is BELOW the ground, unseen for the most but essential to all the life above ground, my mind overflows and can not actually hold it all. I suggest we humans are part and the same—fascinating and miraculous—when we simply open our eyes and hearts and let ourselves be the remarkable living beings we are. Can’t we often see it in children everywhere?

“Crazy?” Yes, too often we behave in ways antithetical to life. But looking at the rest of life serves as a reminder to me of who we really are and allows me to heal the trauma we are so often part of.
