Still Learning To See

Peace

As I sit inside at this keyboard the sun is warming me even with high winds and very low temperature outside. I know not all can feel this peace. Too many slept in tents last night or worked the night shift to repair damage to the city’s infrastructure. But the sun shines on this remarkable planet I am fortunate to live on, and it is a world that, despite storms and disasters, is basically a peaceful place teeming with a miraculous diversity of life. Life depends first and foremost on the energy the sun provides. But it is also the web of all other living things that makes life possible and, yes, peaceful.

This was a week in world news that was not particularly peaceful. Much of the drama was, I’m convinced, intentionally organized with an end result of more chaos in mind. Chaos brings change and chaotic change often is not only not peaceful but is actually damaging to the sustaining systems life has slowly built. I watched in horror as President Zelenskyy was baited and highjacked by our elected leaders. Chaos that quickly put an end to a long tradition of peaceful diplomacy, replacing it with raw, abusive power.

And the other newsmaker, Elon Musk, prompted me to think about what I’d do if I had as much money and power as he has. Although I don’t believe anyone can buy peace, I would certainly do my best to eliminate the countless problems on the planet that disrupt the possibility of peace. For instance, when people have enough food and suitable shelter, they are able to build social networks that support each other. When young men have meaningful jobs, they don’t turn to war. Our resources, used strategically and intelligently, can go a long way to growing peace. Peace here on Earth rather than Mars.

From this week’s horrifying news I am also reminded that I need to take care of myself. Then I will be able to tend to the needs of others. Sorting through my photo database has been a wonderful reminder of the amazing world we live in. I share a few of these to help you remember as well.

Keeping ourselves nurtured, as you said, is certainly needed as we find ways to work towards peace and kindness in our world. It’s there, but certainly hidden by lots of grey clouds of late. Giving kindness, even to one person at a time multiple times each day, can make a difference. Thanks again, John, for sharing yourself, your art and your words of encouragement with us all.

Such beautiful colors and patterns you captured here John. Thank you. I fear for the world with these maniacs steering the ship. Keep on finding beauty, showing it, and taking care of yourself and others.
