Still Learning To See

What do they dream?

A current (and obscene) list of the men in the world who have the most money. The 100-year old man in the center of the header of this posting, my father-in-law, was one of the richest men I’ve ever know and he died without much money.

I woke this morning wondering what Elon Musk dreamt last night. Then I found myself thinking about other, similar people—Murdoch, Trump, Bezos—people who have immense impact on millions and on the Planet itself: what is it like for them to go to sleep? To wake up? To brush their teeth? The things I do every day. What are these men thinking and feeling when they are doing something, simply, as one human being, no entourage needed?

Then I thought about hugging my mom, always such a joy, one I miss so much since she died. I doubt “mom-hugging” would even be something many of these billionaires did regularly, a sad state of affairs indeed.

If I were “king of the world,” a game my brother and I used to play, I’d solve the big problems caused by these spoiled brats by first putting away all their “toys” and then putting them (supervised!) in a group of 3-5 year olds where they could relearn the essentials of life, which they have either forgotten or never really learned in the first place: sharing, loving, crying, taking naps—all the skills needed for living life as it truly is: a miraculous dream of being together with each other in a world that is blue and green and rich with a diversity of life and color.

I’ll dream on, and keep hugging too, even if mom is gone.

What a brilliant idea, to put these billionaires in with a bunch of 3-5 year-olds! Take their phones away from them too so they have a better chance of really engaging with these “teachers” if indeed that is even a possibility. Keep your thoughts and pictures coming, John. I appreciate them (and you) so much! Thanks!

  3. I concur that one doesn’t have to have much money to be rich. Here’s to learning to live rich lives without much money. 🥂

SUCH beautiful photographs– All points well taken.

I was today in Chelsea lunching with women who I saw when living there; too much to describe here, but a favorite part was looking at very large Holstein dairy cows resting adjacent to the house– turns out they are pregnant, the regular milkers further away. Blue sky, sun, so much beauty, C

  5. Help us and them to keep seeing and to keep looking. Your pictures tell a story, a story we all need to see.
