One of the true joys of new snow in the winter is seeing the landscape as a great, clean easel! Animal tracks are often the first “paint” to appear, along with textures, shapes and shadows created by the wind.

Some humans even take time to create masterpieces of snowshoe art! Below from John Predom’s website (with full directions as to how to do this).

I love seeing the transient art resulting from the shadows of trees. Finding an expanse of snow of a big tree is a treasure. If you have a drone, the task may be easier, and the images can be spectacular as Caleb Kenna shows us below in these two magnificent images:

“Ferrisburgh” and “Sudbury,” two copyrighted drone images by Caleb Kenna, a wonderful Vermont photographer who knows the snow shadows of trees very well!
Given I am “droneless,” I must find a spot from which I can make the photograph, not always a simple proposition.

But when it works, snow shadows can be magical, and then, poof, they are gone!

The shadoes of the powerful trunks of trees compliment the more delicate shadows of the branches.

Your images are stunning-looking forward to seeing the exhibit at HCA. I’m going to try to forward some images from a show that will come to Michelson Gallery in Northampton, MA.
Many thanks, Mary. Yes, I’d love to see the images from Michelson or I can check the link when it is posted.
What fun to see these winter photos! So beautiful! I always loved the amazing colors from white, shades of blue and aqua and all the many colors of purple. In the evening they seemed to follow a pattern. I remember looking out the window on the lake as it turned dark near the pipe Dad put between two trees. Must be I sat there at dinner time. What fun it was to watch the snow go through all the shades of purple from light to dark. In the day time there seemed to be more shades of white, blues and aquas! I always loved it!

Thanks sis! Yes, light reflected off snow will keep you busy with finding the perfect watercolor paint! Thanks for your comment. Miss you!
Beautiful and delightful. Thank you John.
Many thanks for visiting, Ned. Enjoy the snow!
Absolutely stunning! Thank you for reminding me to step outside and, more specifically, step outside downtown more often during the winter. As a kid, winter was my favorite season. Lost that enthusiasm over the years though truly appreciate your view and the reminder of winter’s beauty.
