For the past several years my sister Marti and I have collaborated to create entries for the celebration of Poem City. She is the poet and I am the photographer; we’ve worked in both directions, me finding or making a photo that riffs off one of her poems or, as we did this year, she writing to one of my photos—she uses term new to me: “ekphrastic.”
Poem City is a creation of the good folks at our Kellogg-Hubbard Library, where it started twelve years ago and has been growing ever since. Poems are solicited and printed and hung in windows all over the downtown area as part of the month long celebration of poetry. Workshops and slams and lots of good fun too. One of the champions of photography in town, Linda Hogan, had the idea to pair poems and photographs and, voila, Marti and I stepped up again with two creations.

I’m so pleased to share Marti’s work with you here. She is a fine poet who works hard at it and gets it right time and time again. The library too deserves so much credit for making Poem City what it has become. When you are in Montpelier, please take time to stop by and thank them!
Wonderful poems and of course, your photography, John. Thanks for sharing them
