Winter often comes to the Arctic in small steps with new falling snow and temperatures cold enough to form ice as clear indicators of its imminent arrival. This formation of sedimentary bedrock was transformed on the September morning I photographed it with water still flowing over the rock, but with the water now covered with ice and new snow.
