A light frost last night. Perhaps the last of this slow Spring? It seems that everything is almost instantly green or in flower, as if I’ve just woken from sleep. The Shad (Serviceberry) is showing itself on the hillsides and along the wood margins and, thankfully, in our yard.
Historically their blooms marked the arrival of shad, an important migrant fish, in the local rivers as well as the time when burials could finally take place in recently thawed ground. For me the flowering of this diminutive tree briefly marks a moment when I can breathe deeply of this new season of life.
And here is a great blog posting from my friend Mary Holland about Shad: https://naturallycuriouswithmaryholland.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/shadbushserviceberryjuneberry-flowering/
Spring smiles her beauty 💕🌿🌸
Lovely. Reminds me to brush up on my shrub identification.
