With less light and cooler temperatures the Fall garden has slowed down. The colors are not what they are in the summer but are still gorgeous and, honestly, maybe more appreciated knowing where thing are headed. Add a bit of morning fog and the garden is a magical place.
Aside from the simple blooms that persist, one of the other delights of the Fall garden is watching the insects feasting on what pollen and nectar is available. With a frost, all will change but, until then, the Fall garden is a feast to behold.
Here is a selection of what I’ve enjoyed seeing this week.
Hosta, lovely in all seasons.
Even in decay, ferns hold beauty.
Bee Balm hangs on and, as its name suggest, it popular still with the bees.
A fall standby, Joe Pye Weed, is also a boon to the bees.
Snakeroot in bud and in bloom, both lovely
Monkshood, the top of the stalk…
and the bottom, both glorious
Morning Glory!
This Cardinal Flower managed to sneak in under other plants.
Sedum
Sundrops, equally beautiful in leaf as in bloom
Cut-leaf sumac
Peony leaves, almost a gorgeous as the flowers that bloomed so long ago.
