Still Learning To See

Finalists #8 and #9, a pair of abstracts

In many of the photographs I make I enjoy isolating smaller sections of the whole I am seeing to create an abstraction or series of abstractions. I find this particularly interesting to do with many buildings. Here are a pair that will hang together in my upcoming show. I can’t wait to see them with each other!

The angles, the bright sunshine, the deep shadows and the reflections of a blue sky on the galvanized siding, all combine to form an interesting composition on the wall of a building in Montpelier.

A mantra of many photographers is “Be ready!” When I spotted these balconies on a building in Asheville, NC and saw where the sun was headed, I got ready! I also made a point of coming back by an hour later. “Being ready” is only part of making great photos, of course, because luck/good fortune/serendipity also always plays a role.  I had plenty of that with this photograph.
