Still Learning To See

Tate Abstracts

I’ve had fun digging back in the archives this week. I was especially looking for photographs I made at the Tate Modern when we were there six years ago. When we arrived at the museum, which is a huge old Thames River power station re-purposed into a fabulous gallery, we found they were closing in a half-hour. Not wanting to buy tickets for such a short time, Liz hit the gallery store and I walked about with my cameras.

The sun was coming in the large windows at the end of the great hall—formerly the generator room—creating magical light shows and shadows. My mind really could barely contain the abstractions of reality I was seeing. In five minutes I made 21 photographs. These are two that I think are exceptional, the first less abstract and the second seemingly from another planet.

I look forward to a return trip—on another sunny late afternoon—to see what else I might see. In the meantime, I’ll spend more time working with the images I already have!
