Still Learning To See

Seeing differently

The way I go through life almost guarantees I’ll miss things. I’m 6’2″ tall and 63 years-old so I don’t usually see many of the things my nearly 3-year old granddaughter sees, things that are closer to the ground.

Fortuitously, behind my house is a hill, too steep for lawn, but perfect for a rambling, rough flower garden. I can stand on the deck and look right up at the undersides of flowers. I recommend it highly—even if laying down is necessary. The undersides of flowers are a special secret little kids have mostly to themselves. I’m so glad I live on a hill so I can see some of the world differently!

Tulips are especially lovely from below when the light shines down into them.

They are pretty lovely from the side too. A secret world in there...

I especially love that second picture–as if Tinkerbell were in there spreading her dust! I had to chuckle, since I spent much of my time when my 3 were born on the floor with them, and then I would write letters to my mother telling her what the world was like from their point of view–SEAS of dandelions, and lots of knees! 🙂

I sure do that love that first one, John. As well as your perfect explanation! (It’s just as much fun to picture you sprawled out there to see this!)

    • That’s the fun part: I don’t have to go into any yoga pose to see this given they grow on our back hillside! Not that I’m adverse to sprawling out, a very useful and humbling position to sometimes be in!
