I am pleased to realize this morning I’ve posted here for 76 days in a row. And such a special day, honoring love and relationships.
For a number of years now the Valentine Phantom has struck Montpelier, delighting all who pass with hundreds of bright red hearts stuck up all over town. We are all “don’t ask, don’t tell” about who is behind the middle-of-the-night installation and, by unspoken, mutual agreement, just enjoy it.
As much fun as it is to see the heart, it is even more special to see people enjoying the spectacle. Lots of folks out with point and shoot cameras. Little kids, fascinated, with their moms. Somehow I find it easier to say “hello” or “good morning” to those I might just otherwise walk by on another day. Of course is also helps the weather today does not include rain or blowing gales and that the sun is out and the temperatures are in the 30s.

Rumor has it—clearly justified by the number of hearts that blossomed there this morning—the Phantom sometimes hangs out at the local candy store.
I also enjoy the day as an excuse to pull out our copy of Ted Kooser‘s fabulous, slim book of poems, Valentines. It is a collection of poetry he wrote, one poem each on February 14th, and sent to a growing list of women he knew or who requested it. Part of his not-so-secret, ongoing love affair with life.
Eventually the list of those wanting to be his Valentine became so long he included all of us, via this marvelous book. I enjoyed listening to him read one of my favorites again this morning, “Pocket Poem.” And there are others he has recorded as well!
“A Perfect Heart” is another favorite, a poem so perfect it brings tears to my eyes remembering all the hearts I’ve cut out over the years:

Lovely Valentine, John. Thank you.
Thank you. Come visit!
Great post John. Thats a pretty cool idea of putting up the hearts. More places should do that. Valentine’s Day does get you thinking about relationships and ones that have stood the test of time. I think yours and Liz’s or Howard and Lenora’s are very good examples that love does exist and can for a lifetime. Thanks again for the daily posts. They are a welcome distraction from work.
Thank you Nick. We had some good models. I know the foundation of my relationships, especially family, makes all else possible! Now don’t be “distracted” from work, just get up and go for a long walk instead! 😉
