Still Learning To See

That &%!)#*&^ moon!

The full moon last night was stunning. With a fresh covering of snow the night sky was nearly as bright as some of our recent cloudy, winter

The full December moon not quite over Camel's Hump!

days! I woke several times in the night and enjoyed following the high, arcing path of the moon across the sky. About 6:00 I just got up because it was clear the sunrise and moonset—they occur close in time even if on opposite sides of the sky when the moon is full—would probably be stunning.

With a cup of tea and tripod in hand, I drove a short way out of town to Upper North Street and the Sparrow Farm’s amazing western view of the Worcester Range. There was the moon in her full glory and the western sky already tinged a clear pink and orange waiting for the sun to rise above the horizon.

But the moon was in the wrong place! I’d expected it to be much closer to Camel’s Hump, the large, uniquely shaped mountain that dominates Central Vermont. But, darn it, the moon was just far enough to the north that the composition was not particularly pleasing to me or at least not what I’d had in mind. “Silly human” I heard the moon whisper.

I had to laugh at myself! How often have I been disappointed in the way things are, wishing them to be different. Only a fool could wish the moon would be in a different place. The other option—to move Camel’s Hump—seems an equally ridiculous prospect.

Regardless of my emotional gyrations, I enjoyed seeing the moon and on the way back down the hill I both continued to laugh at myself and to comisserate

about what website I might consult to find when the %!)#*&^moon might be in the “right” place!

  1. In the vernacular of the youth, I am ROFL–yep, we humans certainly do like to ATTEMPT to control Mama Nature, but she and her moons and mountains just continue on their path. Still, like the gentle picture–and like that you could laugh at yourself too 🙂
