…there is often, but not always, another and another and another. I notice I sometimes approach photographing a scene or object while also dragging along an inherent sense of scarcity. “This is my only chance!” my little minds screams. Even if the composition or light is not great, I still try to make the image work. Most often it doesn’t. Whenever I look at such a photo, I think “If only…blah, blah, blah.”
I find there are almost always more, similar images to be explored. I was delighted last week to see some needles of Red Pine blowing in the wind after having fallen on the branches of an American Beech tree. The juxtaposition was lovely: the needles angled by the wind and subtle contrast with the browns of the leaves. I tried several images but none worked.
As I walked on I found many other instances where the leaves and needles were working their magic together. In the end I did not keep a single photograph (I really needed another lens) but I certainly enjoyed what I saw. I’ll keep looking.
In the meantime I was delighted to find this bark beetle tunnel on Red Pine bark, the only one I saw, although my guess is there are more for the finding. There truly is no scarcity in the natural world. I just have to look until I see.
Marvelous blog, John. I love what you’ve said, especially today’s post. You always were the wise one.
