Still Learning To See

Learning…

Christmas Fern (Polystichum ascrostichoides)

After our walk yesterday, as is often the case, I relized I’d like to learn more about exactly what we saw, like the names of the ferns. Names are useful, but too often I’ve learned only the names of such things and left the rest of their story unread.

Although it is no guarantee, learning more about something—its life cycle, habitats, and place in the ecosystem for instance—can make the “seeing” that much more detailed and rich. And learning so often leads to other things, a sort of complex ecosystem of learning.
