Still Learning To See

Our families

This race for the presidency has reached a point where I need to be very clear with friends and family and any who reads this. What happened on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden is not who we Americans are. If you’re not yet aware—and I can’t blame you for tuning out some of the noise—these are exact quotes of what Tump’s team said:

• Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe: “There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” And then, “Cool, Black guy with a thing on his head? What is that, a lampshade? Look at this guy, oh my goodness. Wow. I’m just kidding, that’s one of my buddies. He had a Halloween party last night. We had fun. We carved watermelons together.”

• Sid Rosenberg, a conservative radio host: “The whole fucking [Democratic] party, a bunch of degenerates, lowlives, Jew-haters and lowlives. Every one of them. Every one of them.” And then, “You got homeless and veterans, Americans, Americans, sleeping in their own feces on a bench in Central Park. But the fucking illegals, they get whatever they want, don’t they?”

• Grant Cardone, a businessman, speaking of Ms. Harris: “Her and her pimp handlers will destroy our country.”

• Stephen Miller, a Trump adviser: “America is for Americans and Americans only.”

• Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson: “It’s going to be pretty hard to look at us and say: ‘You know what, Kamala Harris, she’s just, she got 85 million votes because she’s just so impressive as the first Samoan-Malaysian, low IQ former California prosecutor ever to be elected president. It was just a groundswell of popular support, and anyone who thinks otherwise is just a freak or a criminal.’”

These are just the lead in to Trump himself talking, yet again, more full of hate and disregard than ever for the rights of all of us including many of my friends, neighbors, family and literally millions who I don’t know personally but who this man so often speaks of so disparagingly. In our families alone are some of the most remarkable people I know and love: queers, gays, trans, Blacks, young and old, Browns, Asians, Veterans, intellectual and emotional differences—but we are, in fact, a poster of those that Trump continues to mock and say are less than, those we should hate because we are The Problem.

And here is the hard part of writing this piece this morning, people I know and some I even love dearly—family members in fact—support Trump. I can only ask them, again, to consider closely how he speaks about so many of the rest of our family, small and large and the literally deadly consequences his being elected will have for them.

The hate that has been a cornerstone of Trump’s life and that was spewed in The Garden this weekend does NOT represent who we Americans are! Our families are what America is about and I ask you to support them—all of us—as you cast your vote. Please speak with those you love about the consequences of this election for them.
