Still Learning To See

Valley Arts Photo Show

I recently showed three photographs reflections in water at the recent Valley Arts Photo Show at the Big Red Barn, a wonderful venue, especially when filled with hundreds of photographs from dozens of fellow photographers. I was all the more pleased—and honored—to have received an Honorable Mention for the photograph above, Reflections with Leaves.

Valley Arts Honorable mention

Photographing reflections in water always transports me to magical places. While I can’t predict exactly what the photo will look like when I click the shutter, I have a pretty good idea when it will result in something astonishing.

I am fortunate to have discovered how to see such things and am pleased both to be recognized for that and to be able to share them.  Thanks to all involved for a great show; I’m already looking forward to next year!

A note: People often comment that these sorts of images “must be Photoshopped,” as if that is some sort of sin (I don’t think it is, even if I’m not a big fan). The truth is tI do very little modification to my images. When I click the shutter, the sensor simply collects information and, given it is in RAW form, it seldom looks like what I was seeing. It is up to me, in software (Lightroom), to adjust that image—just as I used to do in the darkroom—so that it is either how I saw it or how I want others to see it. What you see here is as close to what I see as I can get and simply shows the miracles of water and light playing with each other as I found them.

Fabulous images – as usual! Congrats on the HM. I also liked your comment about digital processing and darkroom processing.

Congratulations that is very exciting to get honorable mention. You deserve it. I am familiar with Josh Axelrod’s photography. His presentation (framing) usually is very striking. D
