Still Learning To See

Changes

In the garden changes—in both growth and death—await being seen every single day. I love the way plants and animals live and work together in the garden. I’ve long thought the notion of “survival of the fittest” is simply not true!

No plant—in fact no living thing—survives alone. The garden is a dynamic, integrated community or ecosystem that changes each year as well as throughout the year, mainly with the weather.

This has been a lovely year to explore these ideas and enjoy seeing how the garden grows as a whole.

Ahhh–makes me think of the old Byrds song, “Turn, Turn, Turn”–Ecclesiastes set to harmony. The plants of this earth form their own calendar, as do the birds and other creatures. Thanks for sharing–

  2. What Darwin meant by his ‘survival of the fittest’ concept was that the organism that ‘fit in’ the best or was symbiotically ‘fit’ with its environment, would survive the best. Also, Michael Pollan makes the interesting notion that the plants actually have everybody, man and insects, working for them. The next time you’re in the garden, think about that. Because they’re immobile, they’ve concocted ways to make us slaves to their beauty. Plus we like to eat them.
