Still Learning To See

Tulips on two days

Light changes! Up until a few days ago, I’d been doing a lot of work with the subjects lighted from the back. I love this sort of light but it is challenging to use with flowers as it can easily overpower subtle color and tonalities. A week of overcast and rain has been more conducive to photographing flowers, the colors often being quite saturated in that light.

This small group of Tulips I planted last fall has been a delight to watch, especially with their backdrop of Forget-me-nots. The photos were made four days apart—the lighting is quite different and the Tulips had begun to age and mellow. (The earlier photograph is on the right.)
