As I’ve mentioned before, I always enjoy being in a place this time of year where I can actually see the close relationship between water and ice. The same day I made the photographs of ice that I’ve posted the past two days I also made some of water along the same reach of the river.
Similar colors —from the rich browns on the far bank to the bright blue sky—can be seen reflected and refracted in both ice and water.
The water, “frozen” in time by the shutter, is clearly not ice and the differences are surreal and fascinating to see with the aid of a camera. It is more like what I imagine Vonnegut had in mind when he wrote of “ice-nine.”

Your abilities to capture the colors in nature with such magnificance are truly awesome, in the deepest sense of the word. The gifts of nature just keep on giving, don’t they? So glad your passion is capturing them. Thank you!
