Still Learning To See

Ice, again

We had some gorgeous mountaintop snow last week and temperatures low enough that even some of the streams were freezing over. Today it was back in the 50s, time for a few last gardening tasks and enjoying the sun.

Because I’ve been thinking about ice, I dug into the files and found some images I made in December of 2008 that really got me excited. Ice is just amazing stuff to photograph. Just to get in the right place can mean being cold and on unsound footing. One thing is certain, I don’t take the physical risks I used to. Still, I don’t mind getting cold and wet if that is what it takes. Getting the light refraction just right is also often an interesting challenge.

I made these two photographs at North Branch Nature Center along the banks of the North Branch of Winooski. Both required some advanced yoga poses to get the angles and lighting right. I didn’t get too wet and the thrill of seeing these images kept me warm!
