Still Learning To See

July 4th, it does take a village

Rob and I, on our excellent Alaskan adventure, found ourselves in the “town” of McCarthy, AK, on July 4th. We’d been prepped to get here no later than noon which is when the parade was scheduled to begin. Given the population of the town is 28 souls, I had my doubts as to whether we should go or not!

But we arrived at 11:55 and the scene was truly what humanity is all about, American or otherwise. Several hundred people were in town and the theme was not so much “rah, rah America” as it was enjoying being with each other. What a delightful day—and lesson about what is really important. It does take a village and this group of seemingly hard-headed, independent Alaskans demonstrated that clearly.

Tomorrow: on to glaciers!

The “band,” on the second loop through town leading a parade that had me laughing and crying both. There were flags but not the “call to arms” that so often seems to be the norm with Independence Day celebrations of late.

Enjoying the 4th in McCarthy!
