The leaves of the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) always amaze me. They have been unfolding these past few weeks. In another few they’ll have provided food to many creatures and become hardened into their tougher summer green. For now, they are remarkably delicate, newly green and covered with “hairs” and crisp folds.

Great minds! On our trip to Ann Arbor, we saw a copper beech that took my breath away. The sun through those gold colors made stained glass patterns under the tree–whose double trunk was like hugging a gigantic elephant leg (and of course I hugged it). These beech trees have a majesty and mystery that captures me. Thanks π
Thanks. Yes, Beech trunks do so often remind me of elephant legs. I’m assuming you and your friends all agreed it was, in fact, a tree you were hugging?!
