Still Learning To See

Beech leaves

The leaves of the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) always amaze me. They have been unfolding these past few weeks. In another few they’ll have provided food to many creatures and become hardened into their tougher summer green. For now, they are remarkably delicate, newly green and covered with “hairs” and crisp folds.

Green illuminated from behind with sunlight. I love the shadow shows that play on leaves like this.

Sky blue and spring green: the essential colors of a spring day..

Green and more green. Beech leaves seen through other beech leaves.

Great minds! On our trip to Ann Arbor, we saw a copper beech that took my breath away. The sun through those gold colors made stained glass patterns under the tree–whose double trunk was like hugging a gigantic elephant leg (and of course I hugged it). These beech trees have a majesty and mystery that captures me. Thanks πŸ™‚

    • Thanks. Yes, Beech trunks do so often remind me of elephant legs. I’m assuming you and your friends all agreed it was, in fact, a tree you were hugging?!
