Still Learning To See

Still more reflections…

I’m not one who often manipulates the scene I am photographing. No strategically placing bright red leaves or deleting a power line in software for me.

I confess I have tossed rocks into water. Still, mirror-like water often yields just a single image, and I always wonder which way to display it—as I see it (upside down) or “right side” up.

To  create other possibilities, a rock (or two) of the right size tossed in the right place can make for some fascinating and endlessly complex ripple patterns. The changes they bring add elements of randomness and unpredictability to an otherwise static image.

I really enjoy watching as the ripples begin, then mature and finally degrade. I use these terms without value judgement but merely to describe what is happening in the cycle of change. All the stages can be fascinating.

Out of dozens of photographs that definitely did not work well, these are two “rock tossing” ones I think do:

I love the minimalist quality of this, showing the beginning ripples from two sources.

In this the ripples have "matured" with fabulous results.
