Still Learning To See

Different and the same

Vegetation near Crystal Springs, FL, where we watched manatees.

Warm rather than cold. Blue and green instead of gray and white. Mockingbirds rather than Goldfinches. Manatees instead of deer. Different temperatures, colors and animals but the same delicately balanced world.

It is easier, perhaps, to see the imbalance here—cars, roads, mega-malls—but my carbon footprint was sizable getting here and while I’m here my house in Vermont remains warm and ready for our return.

What is the balance? What is my part both in helping to keep the planet from tilting any further out of kilter as well as in bringing it back into balance? Balance. Every small bit makes a difference, in one direction or the other.
