Still Learning To See

New ways of seeing

When my old standby lens (Sigma 70-200) died last week, I was feeling the loss and nearly ordered another to replace it. After thinking about it, however, I realized I wanted to be able to see more than that lens allowed me to see. My dilemma became an opportunity!

I ended up buying a 90mm macro (Tamron f2.8) and an older set of closeup extension rings (ASAHI Pentax). Both are options I often used back in the days of film and I miss them. I’ll be able to do much better closeup—and very closeup—work with these.

With great anticipation I tried the rings and found my digital camera (Pentax K-5) did not respond. The shutter refused to click. Argh! I dove into the impossibly long manual and, lo and behold, found obscure direction that took me to a menu buried deep in the camera that enables their use. Perseverance pays off. Hurrah!

I’m looking forward to exploring a great deal of new, actually old, territory with this new equipment. Who knows what new ways of seeing I’ll enjoy?!
